The Environment

LUMBIER, A ‘BURGH’

The old village or ‘burgh’ of Lumbier is nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Leyre, partially surrounded by a bend in the Salazar river, near its confluence with the Irati river. Its territory is framed in the geographical region of the Lumbier Basin, made up of the Romanzado, Urraúl Alto and Urraúl Bajo valleys.

Lumbier is ideal for the excellent natural open spaces of the high Pyrenean valleys of Salazar and Roncal, and for those who prefer the historical heritage, to be discovered nearby at the Monastery of Leyre, Sangüesa, Javier and Sos del Rey Católico. There are also numerous hikers and pilgrims who cross this area of Lumbier all year round on the Camino de Santiago, taking a trip to Javier or strolling through the Cañada Real or the greenway of the dismantled Irati railway line.

ARBAYÚN GORGE

The Arbayún Gorge is the most extensive and impressive of the Navarre gorges, and is found at the entrance to the Pyrenean Salazar Valley, between Lumbier and the Almiradío de Navascués. The landscape eroded by the Salazar River has produced an unparalleled spectacle, with imposing vertical walls following one another for almost 6 km.

LUMBIER GORGE

Griffon vultures fly over the cliff; sheer escarpments where birds nest; a river with clean, fresh waters carving narrow and capricious steps into the rocks; the remains of a bridge that was built with the help of the devil (according to legend); two tunnels through which the first electric train in Spain travelled. The result is a rugged landscape that you can enjoy when you visit the narrow Lumbier gorge, carved by the Irati River and declared a nature reserve.
